My name is Jasen Solt. I am 36 years old, married, have three boys and three dogs.  I began my family in Reno and shortly thereafter my surveying career as a drafter in the Bay Area of California.  The frequent 5 hours of commuting took its toll rather quickly and I found myself relocating my family back to Nevada in just over a year.  I have since worked several years in the field and now I am performing a combination of both field and office work.

Over the course of my short surveying career and coursework at Great Basin College, I have found that peer dialogue is just as important as the mentorship from those that I have worked under.  I can often-times rely on a surveyor’s experience and direction when it comes to situations that arise in the field or office, however, absent a physical classroom and direct communication with others, I have found myself needing to converse with others struggling through the same material.  Most recently, discussing exam preparation with fellow members.  We were able to discuss not only what we were studying at the time but draw on previous exam experience from other mentors.

While the YSN does not have the cumulative experience of the other organizations, it does have their support, and in a short time the YSN has been able to take advantage of their vast amount of experience to help the younger generation of surveyor’s obtain educational and career goals.

I am excited to be a part of the YSN as it has broadened the network of resources that I am able to take advantage of and the opportunity and excuse it provides me with to hang out with the people that I will inevitably be working alongside in this profession.

The Nevada Association of Land Surveyors offers tremendous support for fledgling surveyors, If it weren’t for their support of the students at GBC, Sarah Walker, Nick Montoya, Jason Merchant and I would not have been able to attend the NSPS National Student Competition where we would learn that Nevada did not have a YSN chapter.  This and several beverages, ultimately led to the establishment of the Nevada YSN.  I strongly encourage all of you to join and participate in their regular meetings.  I would not be where I am today without the support and mentorship of the members of NALS.

Congratulations to our February member of the month, Mr. Jasen Solt. Jasen was one of the original five members of the Nevada YSN, and we cannot thank him enough for helping us to build ahead of steam on recruitment. He participated in the 2018 and 2019 NSPS Student Competitions and was instrumental to those projects’ success. Jasen has also recently passed the PS exam and is working toward licensure in CA and NV. We thank you and wish you continued success in your Survey career!!
